Ashley Judd puts a nostalgic twist on her 58th birthday

The Emmy-nominated actress, activist and New York Times bestselling author explained why she chose to celebrate her inner child

ā€œWe backfilled what was always missing and no longer is, thanks to vulnerable imagination,ā€ she said

Ashley Judd is celebrating her inner child after turning another year older.

On Tuesday, May 12, the Emmy-nominated actress shared a recap on social media showing her followers, friends and family how she spent her 58th birthday on April 19.

ā€œMy inner 12-year-old was ready to receive love, care, attunement, delight, protection, and provision,ā€ the Double Jeopardy star captioned the Instagram carousel. She also referenced her birthday the year prior when she honored her ā€œinner nine-year-old.ā€

Judd sat in a chair outdoors, smiling beside a cake with brown and yellow icing, in the first photo. Colorful candles with the number ā€œ12ā€ were placed atop the celebratory dessert.

ā€œHave you ever considered, from your adult perspective, restaging for your sweet inner child an experience she either never had at all?ā€ she asked. ā€œOr an experience that did not unfold with the safety and attention it should have?ā€

The actress, the daughter of Naomi Judd and Michael Ciminella, confessed that the tradition is something that she deeply enjoys.

ā€œMany of us grew up with unmet needs,ā€ Judd wrote. ā€œToday, as adults, we can listen carefully to those missings, identify what happened that should not have happened — and, crucially, what did not happen that should have happened — supplying that, now, with love and humor to ourselves.ā€

While the Kiss the Girls actress remembered ā€œloving some elementsā€ of her time in the sixth grade, she claimed not to ā€œremember any of my birthdays growing up.ā€

Another one of Judd's favorite memories as a child was learning to square dance in P.E. Unfortunately, she said the positive experiences didn't carry over into her home life.

ā€œThere was no parent (or adult) supporting, nurturing, guiding and reinforcing my learning, delighting in, or protecting that little girl,ā€ Judd wrote.

Judd has discussed her childhood in the past, including in her 2011 memoir All That Is Bitter and Sweet. During a 2024 White House event for the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, Judd said her early experiences brought an "onset of childhood depression," and the "feeling of not wanting to be here." However, she has healed with the help of treatment and "had a different outcome than my mother." Naomi died by suicide in April 2022 at 76.

The Someone Like You actress said ā€œsensitive, playful peopleā€ helped her to redo her 12th birthday this past weekend.

ā€œWe backfilled what was always missing and no longer is, thanks to vulnerable imagination,ā€ she wrote.

Their day also included laughing, frolicking and square dancing, as documented in her caption as well as within the content of her Instagram carousel.

Judd continued to recap details in her comment section, sharing that the birthday party also included nostalgic elements such as ā€œvintage Goody hairbrushes to sing unabashedly into the mirror to Casey Kasem Top 40 hits.ā€

However, her ā€œcarefully vettedā€ playlist did remove ā€œMy Sharona,ā€ which she described as having ā€œgrossā€ lyrics.

ā€œChildren need to be seen, witnessed, validated, encouraged, protected, guided, and supported,ā€ she continued, later adding, ā€œToday, it is safe for me to feel the innocence of the childhood I always deserved.ā€
