Jaclyn Smith’s first marriage ended after her then-husband, Roger Davis, had an affair — and Warren Beatty plays an unexpected part in the story.

The *Charlie’s Angels** *star looks back on her acting career and four marriages in her memoir, *I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie*, out now. Her first union was to Roger Davis, an actor she met in 1968 at a commercial casting call.

ā€œI really thought it was a match made in heaven,ā€ she told PEOPLE about her relationship with Davis, which lasted from 1968, when they got married months after meeting, to 1975.

ā€œWe both didn’t drink, we loved architecture, we both were actors, we were both from the South, we liked the same food. We liked everything the same, but boy, did I have a lot to learn.ā€

In the book, she recalls learning he was cheating on her with their realtor. After grabbing lunch in the Upper East side with a friend, Smith insisted on showing a friend an apartment she and Davis were considering renting.

ā€œRoger and I were on the verge of renting an apartment across the street,ā€ she writes. ā€œAfter we settled the bill, I said, ā€˜Let’s go up. I’ll show it to you.ā€™ā€

On their way there, they ran into Beatty, who she describes as ā€œ*the* leading man at the timeā€: ā€œGorgeous. Tall and thin. You couldn’t take your eyes off him. His presence just pervaded the moment.ā€

Beatty recognized Smith for her role in *The Adventurers* and remembered the way her first name was spelt, which made Smith feel like she was dreaming. He then asked her if she would be interested in working together.

ā€œā€˜You know, I’d like you to come in for an interview. I’m doing a new film and might have a part for you,ā€™ā€ she recalled Beatty saying. ā€œBut before I could say, ā€˜I’d love to!’ Roger appeared as if from nowhere and approached our little group.ā€

Smith introduced the two, and Warren relayed his offer for Smith to Davis. ā€œā€˜I was just telling your wife I saw her in *The Adventurers*, and I’d like to interview her for my new film,’ Roger smiled. ā€˜No,ā€ he said, ā€˜she only does commercials,ā€™ā€ writes Smith.

The interaction left her confused, but she figured if Beatty wanted to work with her, he knew how to contact her agent.

At the time, Davis had been working with Laura, a real estate agent. When Laura’s husband, an actor named Bill, tried to make a pass at her — which she declined — he told her about Laura and Davis having an affair.

Incredulous, Smith confronted Laura, who came clean. ā€œI couldn’t imagine how two people I trusted could have betrayed me, and for so long. Laura was telling me to my face what she’d done, but I still couldn’t believe it,ā€ Smith writes.

Laura then brought the story back to Beatty.

ā€œā€˜Remember the day you ran into Warren Beatty outside the apartment, and Roger suddenly appeared on the street out front?ā€™ā€ she writes. ā€œā€˜He’d been upstairs in the apartment having sex with me.ā€™ā€

Smith was still in disbelief. She asked Davis about the affair, who denied it, deflecting the attraction to Bill. ā€œLaura’s just jealous. She’s always coming on to me, but of course I’m not sleeping with her. You know, Bill probably wanted to sleep with you, and this is their game,ā€ Davis told her.

However, Smith knew their marriage was over. ā€œI mean, I was pretty naive and in love with love, but there’s a line,ā€ she told PEOPLE. ā€œWhen the paint starts to peel, get out, because it doesn’t change.ā€

ā€œDenial, I discovered, can be seductive. At that moment, blind belief was easier than truth. And some truths must be seen to be believed,ā€ writes Smith.

ā€œMy options were to leave Roger then, after only two years of marriage, and feel humiliated by my own naĆÆvetĆ©, or to give the man I loved the benefit of the doubt and hope I’d made the right decision. I chose the latter.ā€
