During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show last week, Michael Douglas gave his brutally honest thoughts on Cher winning the Best Actress Oscar over Glenn Close in 1988.

BBCThe topic of the Oscars arose when Graham mentioned that Glenn is set to receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards later this month. If you didn't know, an honorary Oscar isn't awarded competitively; it's given "to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy."

Glenn joked that the Academy is only giving her the award because they "probably don't wanna feel guilty anymore," referring to the fact that she has eight Oscar nominations and no competitive wins.

BBCIt's no secret that Glenn has been repeatedly snubbed at the Academy Awards. And so, Michael shared his opinion that she should have won Best Actress for her performance in their 1987 movie, Fatal Attraction, in which they play lovers embroiled in an affair.

That would have been her fourth [nomination]," Michael said before pointing out that it was Cher who won that year instead. In addition to Glenn and Cher, the other nominees for Best Actress in 1988 were Holly Hunter for Broadcast News, Meryl Streep for Ironweed, and Sally Kirkland for Anna.

For context, Cher won for the romantic comedy film Moonstruck, in which she plays a lonely widow who falls in love with a younger man played by Nicolas Cage.

Immediately, the live audience burst into laughter. Glenn looked rather stunned and advised Michael to "be kind." Meanwhile, on the other end of the couch, Naomi Ackie and Kieran Culkin were laughing so much that Kieran had to turn away.

BBCDespite the ruckus he caused, Michael stood firm in his belief that his Fatal Attraction co-star should've been the winner that year. "Glenn gave one of the greatest performances of all time," he said.

BBCIt didn't take long for a clip to rack up over a million views online, and many movie lovers agreed with Michael's hot take, saying he was "absolutely right." People also pointed out that Michael actually posed for pictures with Cher on the night of her Oscar win, because he won an Oscar that year, too, taking home Best Actor for his performance in Wall Street.

Suffice to say, Michael's quip caused a lot of conversation — and now we've got a response from Cher.
