Joy Behar shared her theory on why The View has won Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host only once at the Daytime Emmys

“They do not like to vote for multiple hosts,” Behar said of the voters during the Nov. 3 episode of The View: Behind the Table podcast

The View won in the talk show host category in 2009, when Behar co-hosted with Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters

Joy Behar is sharing her thoughts on why the Daytime Emmys have rarely awarded The View.

On the Tuesday, Nov. 3 episode of The View: Behind the Table podcast, Behar, 84, shared her theory on why the talk show has won Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host at the Daytime Emmys only once in its 29-year history.

At this year’s ceremony, Sherri Shepherd, host of Sherri, took home the award. Shepherd, 59, beat Kelly Clarkson for The Kelly Clarkson Show, Tamron Hall for Tamron Hall, Jennifer Hudson for The Jennifer Hudson Show and the panel of The View, which includes Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro.

The View was also nominated for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series and Outstanding Art/Direction/Set/Decorative/Scenic Design, both of which were awarded to The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“We didn’t win any, right? Can I discuss that with you?” Behar asked host Brian Teta, also executive producer of The View. “I’ve been here 30 years. I’ve only won one Emmy, okay? They do not like to vote for multiple hosts.”

Teta replied, “I’m going to throw this out there. The Talk won a couple of times, and they had a lot of people.”

“I will address The Talk in a minute,” Behar responded. “But when it comes to multiple hosts, it’s hard to decide to give it to everyone. ‘I like her. I don’t like her. She’s annoying. I like this one. That one I can’t stand, and I can’t vote for the show.’ That’s what happens.”

Speaking of The Talk — the long-running CBS daytime talk show that concluded in December 2024 with hosts Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Natalie Morales — Behar explained that they won because they rarely delved into political topics.

The Talk won 13 Emmys throughout its 15-season run, but won Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host only once, in 2017, when Underwood hosted alongside Julie Chen Moonves, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and Aisha Tyler.

“So you have Trumpers out there who don’t like us because we have a mostly Democratic panel. I admit that,” Behar said of The View. “Even the Republicans [on the show] can’t stand Trump, so that’s a problem when there’s a voter who’s a Trumper.”

Teta pointed out that when The View won Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host in 2009, it was the first time multiple hosts had ever won in the Academy’s history. At the time, Behar hosted the show alongside Goldberg, Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and series co-creator Barbara Walters.

“That’s the exception to the rule,” Behar said of their win. “But I think that’s the reason why we never win, because we are a high-quality show.”

Since its 1997 debut, The View has garnered 190 nominations and 33 wins. It earned nominations in the Outstanding Talk Show Host category every year from 1998 through 2011, as well as in 2014, from 2016 through 2020, from 2022 through 2024 and in 2026.

The series was nominated for Outstanding Talk Show 21 times, winning twice: in 2003 and in 2020.
