Questioned about the decision during an appearance on the Still Here Hollywood Podcast with Steve Kmetko, the Knots Landing actress explained her reasoning

Mills still stands by her decision and has been dating actor Larry Gilman since 2001 Donna Mills is happy being an unmarried woman.

During her appearance on the Still Here Hollywood Podcast with Steve Kmetko in Oct. 2025, Mills was asked by the host about her decision to never get married.

The Knots Landing alum, 85, explained, “I was always so independent. I’m still very independent.”

“I just didn’t ever want to be subject to whatever you have to do when you get married. I also didn’t want to say I was going to love somebody forever,” she admitted, adding, “I don’t know if I would do that or not.”

While Mills has never married, she is in a long-term relationship. She and actor Larry Gilman have been in a relationship since 2001. Mills talked about their relationship in 2022, addressing the fact that they never tied the knot during an interview with The Daily Beast.

“I don’t remember anyone ever getting down on one knee. I am so freaking independent. I just am. I’m very independent and by the time Larry and I met we were both pretty established,” she said. “To combine everything at that point is really difficult. So we just combined our lives but not our finances and stuff like that. It’s much cleaner, much better.”

In doing things her own way, Mills also entered motherhood on her own terms. She was 54 years old when she welcomed her daughter, Chloe Mills, through adoption, and then decided to take an extended hiatus from acting in order to raise her.

“I was very concentrated on my career, but at a certain point, I realized there was something missing — it was a child,” she told PEOPLE in 2022. “So I went after it. By that time, I was 54 and people said, ‘You’re going to be so old [to] have a little toddler running around.’ I never felt that. I never felt older than the other mothers who were probably in their 20s.”

Mills recently opened up to PEOPLE about joining the OnlyFans platform, which allows her “a more personal and direct connection” with her fans.

“The support and encouragement my fans have shown me over the years has meant the world to me,” Mills told PEOPLE in the statement. “While social media has been a great way to keep in touch, I’m thrilled to be joining OnlyFans, where I can connect with people in a more personal, direct way.”
