Max Fried injury update: Why did the Yankees starter leave the game?

Yankees starter Max Fried went into Wednesday's matinee matchup with the Orioles looking to bounce back from his season-high five earned runs allowed in his last start in Milwaukee. He ended up sounding more alarm bells for the Yankees.

Fried — who has battled blister issues throughout his career — left the game after just three innings and 61 pitches. After that two-run third inning, Fried immediately went into the tunnel and back to the clubhouse. Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake followed his ace and then emerged to make a call to the bullpen.

Fried's day was done, and Paul Blackburn got the call to pitch the fourth.

The Yankees didn't make an immediate in-game announcement on what injury Fried had sustained. But the team did eventually say that Fried left with elbow soreness. The ace will undergo imaging on Thursday.

We'll have to see what Boone says of Fried's early exit after the game.
