The Hacks actress noted that she'd "never seen myself in a character the way I see myself in Mary, which is strange because I don't even drink.”

“But that's what Cole's beautiful work does to you — makes you feel incredibly excited and seen at the same time, like a little kid meeting a new friend,” Stalter said of Escola, who wrote the play and originated the role of Mary.

Directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, Oh, Mary! is an outrageous retelling of Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln's assassination. The comedy portrays the First Lady as a miserable, hard-drinking woman who dreams of escaping the White House to pursue her true passion: becoming a cabaret star.

Oh, Mary! opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, at the Lyceum Theatre and became the first show in the theater's history to gross more than $1M in a single week. Since then, the comedy has broken its own box office record 13 times and became the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment.

Other stars who have stepped into the role and worn Mary's signature curls include Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, Hannah Solow, two-time RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon and John Cameron Mitchell.

Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph is currently starring in the role through July 5.
