Ariel Winter and Luke Benward have gone their separate ways.

PEOPLE has confirmed that the *Modern Family* star and her longtime boyfriend called it quits after six years together. According to *t*he outlet, the pair split in August 2025 after dating since 2019.

** has reached out to reps for Winter and Benward for comment.

"They just realized after almost six years that they were better as friends," a source told PEOPLE. "There's tons of love still there between them. They are still best friends and share the pups, so everything is really good."

Winter, 28, and fellow actor Benward, 31, were known to share photos of their many dogs and cute cooking videos on social media. They were friends long before they started a romantic relationship.

"It was pretty bizarre at first because that was never something that I expected at all," Winter told *Entertainment Tonight* in 2021. "It's been the biggest blessing for me. He is amazing. He is definitely my safe space. We've been able to grow together and not just be in a relationship, but we're partners in business. We're partners. He's my best friend. He's my boyfriend, so it's really beautiful to be able to get to that place with somebody and to have the friendship foundation first and then to be able to grow into everything, is really, really beautiful."

Winter and Benward worked together on the film *Don't Log Off*, a thriller they produced and starred in that was filmed at the height of the COVID pandemic. It was released last year.

Benward starred as Beau Landry on Disney Channel's *Good Luck Charlie* and has appeared in films like *Dumplin*' and *Measure of a Man*. He previously dated Olivia Holt after meeting her on the set of Disney Channel's *Girl vs. Monster*.

Winter was also a child star, growing up playing Alex Dunphy on the ABC sitcom *Modern Family* from 2009 to 2020. She was linked to Canadian actor Levi Meaden before her romance with Benward.

Winter has recently been busy promoting a new film in the *Sofia the First* franchise, *Sofia the First: Royal Magic*, in which she voices the titular princess. She's held that gig since 2012.
