Lionsgate has greenlit its Naruto Live-Action film to begin production in spring 2027, with Sony Pictures joining to co-finance and handle international distribution. The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news on Tuesday, 3 November, said it followed competitive bidding among several studios, which Sony Pictures won.
Sony's case was helped by the three-year first-look producing deal Cretton (director, writer, producer) signed with the studio in September after Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Lionsgate keeps development, production, and domestic release.
Everything we know about the Naruto Live-Action movie so far
Fans have long demanded a Naruto Live-Action film. However, the road to this particular project began in February 2024, when Lionsgate attached Destin Daniel Cretton as writer and director. Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu (producers, Arad Productions) were later confirmed to be producing alongside Cretton and Jeyun Munford (Hisako).
The Naruto Live-Action film moved into public view on 10 July 2026, when the franchise’s official website opened a worldwide casting search for Team 7: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. It was later reported that Charles Melton was in talks for Kakashi Hatake, the elite ninja who mentors Team 7; he has not been confirmed. Then, on Saturday, 10 October, at the “NARUTO: What’s Next?” stage at the New York Comic Con panel, Cretton shared a message:
“We’re approaching the world, relationships, and journeys Kishimoto-sensei created with a lot of care, and we want to capture what makes Naruto so special."

“a perfect partner for Naruto."
Tom Rothman (chairman and CEO, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group) said,
“Lionsgate has done a masterful job in putting together an A-level adaptation.”
Kishimoto’s manga ran 700 chapters across 72 volumes on Weekly Shonen Jump. The opening Land of Waves arc alone covers 33 chapters in four volumes, so a film built on Team 7’s formation should be expected to leave roughly 667 chapters untouched. No comment from the mangaka was included in this announcement.
So far, no release date, no cast, and no teaser of the Naruto Live-Action film have been revealed, and no shooting start beyond “spring 2027” has been given. However, if cameras start rolling in spring 2027, a 2028 release can be expected, in line with the summer slots Sony has favoured for its tentpoles. Fans hoping for a cast reveal will likely have to wait; as manga readers will know, the story’s biggest turns sit hundreds of chapters later.
