A 25-foot-deep sinkhole near the seaside home of Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage prompted an emergency response and the evacuation of 31 nearby homes.

Footage from the scene (below) shot Tuesday shows a crater in the ground near the driveway of what is widely reported to be the 62-year-old *Adaptation* and *National Treasure* actor’s house in Malibu.

The *Los Angeles Times* reported that local officials ordered the evacuation of 31 other nearby homes after the sinkhole opened outside the star’s house.

According to the city of Malibu’s website, “a local emergency” occurred Tuesday “following a large sinkhole forming near 31630 Sea Level Drive.” The *Times* additionally reported that the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene at 5:45 a.m. local time.

Later Tuesday, the sinkhole was reported to have grown to a depth of 25 feet and 30 by 60 feet in diameter.

Officials cited “public safety concerns as an expanding sinkhole restricts vital access for residents and emergency services” as the reason for the evacuation. While authorities have not formally determined a specific cause for the sinkhole, they warn that “these conditions are likely to worsen with forecasted high tides and rain caused by Hurricane Marie,” per the city’s emergency announcement.

The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter for evacuees at Malibu High School.

When reached about the city’s emergency* *response*, *a* *Malibu public information officer tells * * via email that they “will pass” on providing more information. EW has additionally reached out to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Cage’s representatives for comment.

Cage’s reported ordeal comes more than a year after other stars’ Malibu-area homes were impacted by the 2025 Palisades Fire.

*Star Wars* actor Mark Hamill wrote on Instagram at the time that he “evacuated Malibu so last-minute there (were) small fires on both sides of the road as we approached [Pacific Coast Highway].”

*This Is Us* actress and pop star Mandy Moore also shared an Instagram Story updating her fans on how the fire impacted her, noting that she “evacuated and [is] safe with kids, dog, and cats. Praying and grateful for the first responders.”

Cage has been a Hollywood staple on the big screen for decades and most recently starred in the Prime Video streaming series *Spider-Noir. *He is supposedly next set to return to the *National Treasure *film franchise in a third film, with original director Jon Turteltaub recently announcing that the long-awaited film will happen.

“It’s finally real. Now, it’s Hollywood real, meaning things could happen,” he said on the *National Treasure Hunt* podcast at a live event, according to *The Philadelphia Inquirer*. “Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no *National Treasure 3*. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a *National Treasure 3*. Welcome to Hollywood.”
