U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott said Saturday that federal investigators are examining whether political operatives intentionally fielded a second candidate named Dan Sullivan in Alaska to mislead voters in the state’s U.S. Senate election.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Saturday in America,” Scott, a Republican senator from South Carolina, addressed an ongoing Department of Justice probe into the campaign of Dan J. Sullivan, who is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.

“The truth is that the fake Dan, the decoy Dan, his one objective is to confuse voters,” Scott said. “Number two, if there’s a second point, is the collusion that occurred to recruit this candidate. That is a criminal offense.”

Federal prosecutors asked state election authorities late Friday to preserve and separate all ballots cast for Dan J. Sullivan while the inquiry continues. Authorities have issued more than 30 subpoenas tied to the case.

The dispute involves allegations that third parties coordinated to recruit Dan J. Sullivan, a resident of Petersburg, Alaska, to draw support away from the incumbent senator in a race that includes Democratic nominee Mary Peltola. The Alaska Supreme Court previously affirmed a lower court ruling that allowed both candidates named Dan Sullivan to remain on the ballot.

Reporting by The New York Times cited during the broadcast described internal discussions involving political organizers seeking an alternative candidate to dilute the incumbent’s vote. Dan J. Sullivan and representatives for the Peltola campaign have denied any improper coordination or unlawful activity. In previous court filings, Dan J. Sullivan maintained his bid was authentic and stated he had no interaction with Peltola’s campaign staff.

Scott noted that the candidate’s branding closely tracked that of the incumbent senator, citing campaign logos, fonts, and color palettes.

“Every single piece of his campaign information the real Dan Sullivan’s logo, the colors, and even the font,” Scott said. “All that with 30 subpoenas means he could be in serious federal trouble.”

Scott also cautioned that anyone questioned by federal investigators could face severe consequences for dishonest statements, noting that “lying to the prosecutors, that’s a felony.”

Addressing other key contests on the national map, Scott rejected polling that showed incumbent Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham in a competitive race in South Carolina.

“We win in South Carolina without any question. Don’t believe the polls,” Scott said, adding that the party remains focused on protecting its Senate majority in battlegrounds across the country.
