Patrick Stewart and his wife Sunny Ozell shared their home with two victims of the Eaton Fire in 2025.

One of the evacuees, Mason Stoops, said that his time in Stewart’s home was “filled by their warmth, kindness, and relentless hospitality.”

Stoops added, “Patrick taught me so much: about art, about true dedication to one’s craft.”

The X-Men star welcomed musician Mason Stoops and wife Brooks (and their dog Apple) into his home after the young couple was forced to evacuate from their house due to the Eaton Fire in Altadena, Calif., in early 2025. Stoops reflected on his experience living with Stewart and his wife, musician Sunny Ozell, in an emotional Instagram post after the actor’s death at 86 on Wednesday.

“After evacuating the Eaton Fire, Sunny and Patrick took Brooks, Apple, and me into their home without a single hesitation,” Stoops wrote in his Instagram caption. “A year that would otherwise have been consumed by grief, confusion, and loneliness was instead filled by their warmth, kindness, and relentless hospitality. We became our own chosen family.”

Stoops painted a lovely picture of life with Stewart and Ozell. “Cocktails and dominoes every evening, followed by arguably the best food Brooks and I (and Apple) have ever had, all made with love by Sunny,” he wrote. “Times I know we will remember the rest of our lives.”

Stoops shared how Stewart passed on his wisdom. “Patrick taught me so much: about art, about true dedication to one’s craft, and about the belief that your best work//self comes only from championing the people around you,” he wrote. “Most of all, he showed me how to be a truly loving partner — even in, if not directly in spite of, the most challenging of circumstances.”

The musician said that Stewart and Ozell played a significant role at his recent wedding. “As more time passed, Patrick never stopped showing up for us,” he wrote. “He helped Brooks pick out her dress, and I proudly wore his suit as Sunny so f---ing beautifully officiated our wedding.”

He said that he and Brooks are “painfully grateful to have spent what time he had left together, playing his favorite songs, sharing our favorite stories, and holding each other close.”

Stoops concluded, “I loved//love our chosen family, and I am grateful for each and every moment//memory we had together. I just wish there were more. We love and miss you so much, Patrick. Thank You.”

Ozell commented on Stoops’ post with a supportive message. “He loved you so so much Mason. Forever grateful for yours and Brooks’ friendship and presence. ❤️‍🔥”
