Visitors to Althorp, Princess Diana's childhood home, have been greeted by a security warning sign reading, "Warning 24-hour security."

While the exact date the sign was erected remains unknown, the recent visit by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the area is likely to renew interest in the estate. The Sussexes have now returned to the UK after six years of living across the pond.

Althorp also serves as Princess Diana's final resting place following her death, a site that her brother, Earl Charles Spencer, guards with the utmost seriousness. The Earl opens the sprawling estate to visitors just once a year, for two months, during which guests are free to explore the property and its grounds.

However, access to the Oval Lake, where Princess Diana was laid to rest, is strictly off-limits.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a dedicated temple on the mainland. After Diana's coffin was transported to the island, the Earl made the decision to remove the bridge connecting it to the mainland in order to bolster security.

Family members wishing to visit the island must now arrive by boat, according to Hello! magazine.

In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry wrote, "The bridge had been removed, to give my mother privacy, to keep intruders away."

The estate, situated in Northamptonshire, boasts a 90-bed property. Althorp closes its doors to the public each year on August 31, the anniversary of Princess Diana's death, a date that her brother marked this year with a heartfelt post on Instagram.

Earl Spencer shared an image of the Spencer family crest flag at half-mast above Althorp House, writing, "31 August. My least favorite day."

At the same time, dedicated admirers of the princess assembled at the entrance of Kensington Palace, her former London residence, to leave floral arrangements and memorial tributes.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited Althorp earlier this summer to pay their respects with flowers. They were accompanied by their two children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie.
