There’s one celebrity-loved sandwich that’s undeniably more famous than any other. If you’re unfamiliar with it, Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich featured banana, peanut butter, and bacon, pressed between two slices of bread and griddled until golden brown.

Although this decadent creation has held on to its fame for decades, Presley is far from the only celebrity with a favorite sandwich. Like the king of rock and roll, many other pop culture icons favor sandwiches featuring unexpected ingredient combinations. Mononymous content creator Domenic (@dominicskitchen) is documenting celebrities’ favorite sandwiches on social media, showing followers how to make everything from Billie Eilish’s plant-based eggplant sandwich to Matthew McConaughey’s viral tuna salad recipe.

Some of the sandwiches Domenic spotlights are inspired by the ingredients a specific celebrity enjoys, while others are exact replicas of sandwiches someone famous has said they love. They run the gamut from obviously delicious to somewhat questionable, often falling somewhere in between. One deceptively simple yet potentially excellent sandwich idea comes from another legendary musician: Ringo Starr.

How to make Ringo Starr’s favorite sandwich

In a 2021 interview withĀ Stephen Colbert, Starr declared that a plain cheese sandwich is the best version of the classic dish. The Beatles’ drummer is a vegetarian and, as Colbert points out, is ā€œa simple man.ā€ Starr offers only one specification for his ideal sandwich, clarifying that it must include goat cheese.

According to the musician, he won’t consume anything made with cow’s milk because ā€œthe molecules are so big. Have you seen a cow?ā€ Colbert prompts Starr to explain, confirming that the drummer won’t drink or eat cow’s milk products because the animal itself is too big. (A goat, in contrast, is smaller.) Does it make sense? No, not at all. But it did give Domenic an idea for an easy sandwich that falls somewhere between a grilled cheese and a charcuterie board.

Starr doesn’t say that his ideal sandwich has to be limited to a single kind of goat cheese, and in his re-creation, Domenic chooses two: a soft, spreadable chĆØvre and a firm, grateable goat’s milk cheddar. (I’d swap out the latter forĀ Mitica’s Drunken Goat, a red wine-soaked goat cheese from Spain.)

Domenic toasts two slices of bread in a pan until golden brown on both sides. (He toasts the bread in butter, but if you want to stay true to Starr’s preference for no cow products, a plant-based margarine would work well.) He then spreads a thick layer of chĆØvre on one slice, grates a generous amount of the firm goat cheese over it, and finishes the sandwich with the other piece of toast.

I love an elaborate sandwich piled high with toppings, but I also love a simple grilled cheese — and I see no reason I can’t make one that stars tangy, rich chĆØvre. I also appreciate niche food preferences, and Ringo Starr’s bizarre sandwich rationale has earned a permanent place in my repertoire of weird recipes, right alongside James Beard’sĀ onion sandwich.
