Three time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg shared his theories on extraterrestrials today ahead of his upcoming summer sci-fi movie, Disclosure Day.
Today at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, attendees gathered to watch the legendary director's interview with Sean Fennessey, co-host of The Big Picture podcast. During the talk, Fennessey explored the legacy of Spielberg's unparalleled career in the film industry. The interview highlighted both his lifetime achievements and the "nitty gritty" details, including his personal opinions on alien life.
When asked about former President Obama's recent comments on extraterrestrial lifeforms, Spielberg—the director behind several massive alien-driven projects—responded with the passion of a true sci-fi enthusiast.
"I think that for one thing, when President Obama made that comment, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is so great for “Disclosure Day,’" said Spielberg. "Then, two days later, he stepped back the comment and said what he believed in was life in the cosmos, which of course everybody should believe that because no one should ever think that we are the only intelligent civilization in the entire universe. So I’ve always believed, even as a kid, that we were not alone. So that just goes without saying. The big question is: Are we alone now?”

The director revealed that his curiosity surrounding aliens was reignited after a 2017 New York Times article reported on U.S. Navy pilots witnessing unidentified aerial phenomena. Refocusing on his upcoming blockbuster, Spielberg left audiences with a provocative sentiment: "I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong, sticky suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now. And I made a movie about that.”
Slated for theatrical release in June, Disclosure Day will mark Spielberg's ninth major sci-fi work and his fourth film dedicated specifically to aliens. Over the course of his six-decade spanning career, Spielberg has explored the existence of alien life through landmark films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and War of the Worlds (2005).
Disclosure Day will follow the global fallout out after undeniable proof of alien life is exposed on a worldwide scale. The film will center around themes of conspiracy, societal upheaval and government secrecy in an effort to mimic what a real-life alien discovery might look like. Spielberg's newest alien blockbuster has already earned significant buzz online, further cementing his legacy as a creator of cultural phenomena.
