Target has hit a retail milestone: the opening of its 2,000th store.
The Minneapolis-headquartered retailer opens the watershed location on Sunday, March 15, in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, just southwest of Raleigh. Four other new stores also open that day: two in California and one each in Missouri and Texas.
During 2026, Target is planning to open more than 30 stores and remodel over 130 stores, the company has said. The expansion is part of $5 billion in capital expenditures announced by CEO Michael Fiddelke during Target's investor day on March 3.
The goal? "We're making big changes to lead with a trend-forward assortment, elevate the guest experience, accelerate with technology and equip our teams to deliver the most delightful experience in retail, for today and over the long term," Fiddelke said in a statement.

The 2000th store, located in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, has a food and beverage department that is 30% larger than the company's average location. At 148,000 square feet, the store also houses a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks Cafe and Disney Shop at Target. The average Target store covers about 125,000 square feet, the company says.
Target plans to open more than 300 new Target locations by 2035 as part of its expansion plans. The company's announced plans come a month after Target cut about 500 office and supply chain jobs to increase payroll for store staff.
Fiddelke, who took over as CEO in February, had said in October the company would cut around 1,800 corporate roles in its first major layoff in about a decade. The company will lay off around 100 people at the store district level and about 400 across its supply chain sites, the internal email sent to employees by Adrienne Costanzo, chief stores officer, and Gretchen McCarthy, chief supply chain and logistics officer, said.
A new Target in Springfield, Missouri, opened on Thursday, March 12, ahead of its scheduled grand opening on March 15.
The retailer has struggled and reported a 2.5% comparable sales decline during the three-month period that ended Jan. 31 and included the holiday shopping period. However, Fiddelke forecast net sales growth for each quarter this year.
"Target’s strong balance sheet gives it the financial wherewithal to execute" its expansion plans, said Carol Levenson, director of research for Gimme Credit, in a research note. But Levenson said she remained "skeptical about a miraculous turnaround."
