President Donald Trump has taken a stand against Daylight Saving Time, one day after Democrats swept the House and Senate after the midterm elections.

Trump unleashed a rant on Truth Social, aruging that it was "ridiculous" that it's "so dark outside so early," as the sun now goes down earlier in the evening.

"Too bad the Senate has not yet approved the Sunshine Protection Act or the I Don't Want to Change My Clocks Anymore Act. It's so dark outside, so early (Sunset was 5:06 P.M., and it was dark by 5:31 P.M. - Isn't that ridiculous?). Just a few days ago it was so nice and sunny at this same time," Trump wrote.

The president continued, adding: "In addition, everyone's been running around changing their clocks all over the place."

Trump claimed that he didn't want to raise the issue prior to the election "because I didn't want to have certain Senators lose their Race, in a landslide, but it is too bad they can't get it done."

"The House sent it over to the Senate with great bipartisan support, numerous times (308-117), but the Senate didn't take it up. We have far bigger priorities, but I will keep fighting for this! President DONALD J. TRUMP," Trump closed out the statement.

Daylight Saving Time started Sunday, March 8, and ended on Sunday, November 1.

The ritual of changing the clocks twice a year to get more daylight has been in place for more than 50 years.

Why did daylight saving time begin in the US?

In the U.S., daylight saving time began in 1918 during World War I as an attempt to conserve fuel, power, and extend the workday during wartime.

Working during daylight hours meant burning less fuel and having the ability to work later into the day.

The Standard Time Act of 1918, which established the time change, also established the nation's official time zones.

Congress repealed daylight saving time after WWI ended. It was enacted again in 1942 during World War II and repealed in 1945.

The modern-day daylight saving time change was enacted in 1966 with the passage of the Uniform Time Act, reestablishing the biannual change.

The most recent change to how Americans observe daylight saving time occurred with the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which extended daylight saving time by a few weeks. It now begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday in November.
