Since releasing their first album in 2013, BTS has grown into one of the biggest groups in music.
Their songs and albums have amassed billions of streams and the K-Pop group was the first Korean pop act to receive Grammy and BRIT Award nominations. They’ve addressed the United Nations General Assembly, appeared on TIME’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world and became some of the youngest recipients of the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit.
The band went on a break in 2022 so the members could complete South Korea’s mandatory military service and work on solo projects, and at the start of 2026, they announced their return with a new album, Arirang, which was released on March 20. The following day, a concert, BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang, hosted at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, South Korea, will be streamed exclusively on Netflix.
A huge world tour, the band’s first since 2022, will then begin on April 9 and include 28 stops in the U.S.
But, what does BTS mean? Here’s everything to know about the name’s origins and how the group members decided on their own names.

BTS is an acronym for the name “Bangtan Sonyeondan," which translates to “Bulletproof Boy Scouts." They’re also sometimes called the Bangtan Boys.
One of the group’s members, j-hope, said on the South Korean radio show Kiss the Radio in 2013 that the name represents the group’s desire “to block out stereotypes, criticisms and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets.”
In 2017, BTS announced that its name would also stand for "Beyond the Scene," to represent growth “from a boy to an adult who opens the doors that are facing forward.”
When was BTS formed?

In 2010, the CEO of Big Hit Entertainment, Bang Si-hyuk, initially wanted to form a hip-hop group around rapper RM. Realizing there was more potential in an idol group — a crew of young, highly-trained performers — Bang pivoted his plans and started recruiting other members of the band.
RM, SUGA and j-hope were the initial members and after more auditions, Jin, Jung Kook, V and Jimin joined. Bang decided to give the members more freedom and individuality as compared to the strict norms in most idol groups, emphasising their own identities, and in 2013, they released their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool.

BTS has seven members: rappers RM, SUGA and j-hope and singers Jin, Jung Kook, V and Jimin. RM, who was the band’s first member, is also the group’s leader.
RM, whose real name is Kim Namjoon, told Entertainment Tonight in 2017 that he chose the name Rap Monster as a teenager because he thought it was “cool." He formally changed his stage name to RM that year because he felt that Rap Monster was no longer representative of himself or his music.

He also said that the name could “symbolize many things” and “have more spectrums to it," like "Real Me" — encompassing his multiple identities, including leader, rapper, idol and songwriter.
SUGA, real name Min Yoongi, took his name from the first syllables of the basketball position shooting guard, which he played as a student. j-hope, born Jung Hoseok, told YamanTV in 2015 that he took his stage name from his desire to represent hope for fans and to be “the hope of BTS." It’s also a reference to the ancient Greek Pandora’s box myth, as all that was left inside after the box was closed was hope.
Jin, born Kim Seokjin, kept part of his real name, as did Jung Kook, whose full name is Jeon Jungkook. V, real name Kim Tae-hyung, chose his name to stand for victory.
Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in 2021, Jimin said that he considered making his stage name Baby G or Baby J, before opting to just use his real name.
What is BTS’ logo?

BTS has had two main logos over the years. The logo created in 2017 has an all-black color scheme, consisting of two mirrored trapezoids side by side with the letters BTS underneath.
It was created to align with the logo for their fan group, which is similar but with the trapezoids mirrored in the opposite way. It was also designed to look like a bulletproof vest, based on the band’s name.
In 2026, the band has used another logo — consisting of three red circles, or dots — as part of their comeback. Fans have speculated that they may represent the band’s journey in three different phases. They also resemble the Korean hangul letters that begin each syllable of the name Arirang, as well as the trigram elements from the Korean flag. Jung Kook drew the sketches that became the logo.
What are BTS fans called?

BTS has a large, dedicated fanbase known as ARMY, which stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth. The band told PEOPLE in 2017 that they will “never” get used to having such dedicated fans. RM said, “Wherever we go, there are hundreds of fans waiting for us shouting our names. It’s so amazing that they know our names and all the Korean lyrics of our songs.”
Speaking on The Tonight Show in 2021, the group shared that they almost named their fandom Bell instead of ARMY.
RM explained, "When you say 'bell' in Korean, it sounds like 'bang wool.' It starts with the same word, 'bang.' "
"So when we think of the fan[dom] name, someone brings up the idea, like, 'What about the bell thing?' Everybody rings their bells and [we're] like, 'Make some noise!' and the Bells are like 'ring-a-ling-a-ling.’ But thank God ... ARMY is so much better."
