The Netflix documentary *Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool* takes an intimate look at the little-known background of a man who went from starring in an iconic action series to becoming a household name, before disappearing from the spotlight entirely.

Even if you’re not familiar with Mr. T — born Laurence Tureaud — if you have a pulse and two ears, you’ve probably heard his famous catchphrase: “I pity the fool.” The iconic quote came from his *Rocky III* character Clubber Lang, and from there, he went on to play what is arguably his most famous role, Sgt. B.A. Baracus on *The A-Team**, *for five seasons.

But just as quick as his rise to fame was his disappearance from the spotlight. Aside from his two major roles and wrestling career, Mr. T is best known for his signature mohawk, mountain of gold necklaces, and that enduring catchphrase. *Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool* attempts to uncover the real man underneath the famous name.

“I’m not just some phone, fake, you know, celebrity or whatever, some fictitious hero,” Mr. T says in the doc. “I’m real life, real life, and it took me a while to understand who I really am.”

Who is Mr. T?

Mr. T was a cultural icon of the 1980s, first starring in *Rocky III* (1982) before he was cast on *The A-Team,* which he’d star in for the entirety of its run from 1983 to 1987. Though actor George Peppard was meant to be the main draw of the series, Mr. T ended up handily eclipsing him as the no-nonsense mechanical genius B.A. Baracus (which stood for either Bosco Albert or Bad Attitude).

But in addition to being an actor, Mr. T was also a wrestler and took part in the first *WrestleMania*, where he teamed up with Hulk Hogan*. *He became a global superstar for his tough-guy persona and unforgettable look, which featured a unique mohawk haircut and piles of gold chains around his neck. He also became known for his motivational messages targeted towards children to keep them away from drugs.

How did Mr. T become famous?

Mr. T was discovered by his *Rocky III* costar Sylvester Stallone when he entered the 1980 competition “America’s Toughest Bouncer,”* *which aired as part of the *Games People Play* primetime special on NBC. If competitors earned enough points, they’d win a place in the final boxing events.

Mr. T placed in the final and caught Stallone’s attention, which led to an audition for *Rocky III. *Though he had no acting experience, he was good at knowing how and when to pull his punches, unlike other contenders. “If I hit him too hard, I might not get the part,” Mr. T recalled in an interview with *Us Weekly**.*

After some time spent in the U.S. Army, Mr. T began working as a nightclub bouncer in Chicago,* *where he’d collect lost jewelry — cultivating materials for what would become his signature look of layered necklaces.

“People were concerned that I had too much gold and they asked me if it was too heavy,” he told *The Guardian*.* *“Nobody said to my ancestors: ‘That pregnant lady shouldn’t be in chains.’ Nobody cared about that, but all of a sudden they’re worried about this Black man, Mr T.”

Due to his military background and imposing stature, he was eventually hired as a celebrity bodyguard, protecting big names like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and Steve McQueen.

How did Mr. T get his name?

Long before Mr. T became a public figure, he had already changed his name from Laurence Tureaud to Mr. T — *legally*. When he turned 18, he made his name change permanent. The reason? Because he had too often watched his male family members be disrespected by white men.

“As a Black man growing up in white society,” he told the *Chicago Sun-Times* in August 2026, “I watched my father being called a boy. I watched my uncle being called a boy. I watched my brother, a Marine coming home from Vietnam wearing his uniform, being called a boy. “

He continued, “I self-ordained myself Mr. T., so the first word out of everybody’s mouth would be ‘Mr.’”

Why did Mr. T step back from Hollywood?

Though *Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool* largely chalks up the actor’s downfall to poor business decisions and bad behavior — a characterization that Mr. T has very publicly disputed, despite director Scott Weintrob insisting that he loved the film when he saw it — Mr. T says that he stepped away from the spotlight because he didn’t feel like acting anymore.

“I don’t want to sound cocky or conceited, but if I never made another dollar, if I was never on TV again, all I ever wanted to do is done,” he told *The Guardian*. “All I wanted to do was buy my mother a beautiful house and pretty dresses. I done that in the ‘80s, so the game was over. It was done. I was already walking away.”

He continued, “How many people have sold their soul to the devil, chasing money? I’m not chasing the dollar. I never did.”

Where is Mr. T now?

Aside from participating in his Netflix documentary, Mr. T has retired from acting and the spotlight; before appearing in the doc, his most recent role was as a competitor on *Dancing with the Stars* in 2017. He also briefly had a home improvement reality series called *I Pity the Tool,* but it was not picked up after the pilot in 2015. He survived a T-cell lymphoma diagnosis in the ‘90s and has been in remission since 2001.

He is a born-again Christian and has done extensive charity work with the U.S. Army and the Make-a-Wish Foundation *— *something he wishes that the documentary spent more time focusing on. He also does volunteer work in his hometown of Chicago and still delights fans by making appearances at conventions.
