Will Trent is gearing up for a new round of crimes to solve.
The popular police procedural, which is based on the best-selling book series by Karin Slaughter, was renewed for a season 5 shortly before season 4 wrapped in May 2026. The show first premiered on ABC in January 2023 and is now the most-watched scripted series for the alphabet network based on live and same-day viewership, according to Deadline.
Will Trent stars Ramón Rodríguez as Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Trent solves crimes alongside his colleague Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson) and his boss, GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn). After a shocking season 4 finale, however, not all cast members will be returning for the fifth installment.
“Going into season 5, it just really felt like we needed a reset and some new energy, and some new dynamics,” co-showrunner Liz Heldens told TV Insider in May 2026. “These were really hard and emotional decisions for the writers. There was a lot of back and forth in the room, but, eventually, we did what we thought was best for the future of the show.”
Here’s everything to know about Will Trent season 5.

Season 4 of Will Trent ended on a tough note for dedicated fans.
In episode 16, Will’s boss Amanda is murdered while investigating a cult led by Adelaide Trevens (Mallory Jansen). Her death has a major impact on Will and his fellow GBI colleagues.
Co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal later told Variety that season 5 will pick up in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“Her death had the most impact on the most amount of characters,” she said. “It really sets everybody reeling from this enormous loss. So it’s such a reset for our characters in a way that is painful but exciting for season 5.”
Amanda’s death isn’t the only heartbreaking moment of season 4, however.
During the season finale, APD Detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) goes into labor and is rushed to the hospital by her husband, Dr. Seth McDale (Scott Foley). The couple get into a major car crash on the way, and though Seth is able to deliver the baby, he eventually dies of internal bleeding at the hospital.
The finale subsequently flashes forward to Will visiting Angie — who is devastated after learning about her husband’s death — and meeting her daughter, Edie. He brings the mother and daughter back to his home to stay with him and assures the newborn that he’ll be her “Uncle Will” and watch out for her.
“Here’s the contract. I will be here, slightly terrified. I’m probably going to mess up some, but I will make sure you are okay. I’ll make sure that you feel safe and loved,” he tells her.

The police drama was renewed after season 4 became the series’ most-watched installment to date.
It is also the only the show to grow consistently with each season since Scandal, according to Deadline.

Though the official Will Trent season 5 cast list is still under wraps, Rodríguez has already expressed his excitement about the show’s renewal on Instagram.
Several other longtime cast members are also expected to appear in season 5 — including Christensen as Angie, Richardson as Faith, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, Kevin Daniels as Franklin Wilks and Bluebell as Will’s pet chihuahua, Betty Maria White Trent.
Meanwhile, since Sohn and Foley’s characters were both killed off, they would only be able to return via the main character’s mental processing.
“That’s always a little of a comfort that we have a mechanism by which we could bring people back if Will needs to work something out,” Heldens told Variety.
As for Bill Appleyard (Jason Davis), the interim deputy director of the GBI will not return for another season after stepping up in the wake of Amanda’s death.
“We will have a new deputy director of the GBI coming in,” Rosenthal told TV Insider. “So, for the fans who assumed that we were grooming Appleyard for the position, he was more of a stepping stone.”
She continued, “He might be back to help with some transition, but there will be a new person with a new dynamic for Will and Faith, and that’ll be interesting, and hopefully set up some new types of conflict.”
