Outlander is ending with season 8 on May 15
Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan pushed for an additional season to give fans a satisfying conclusion
A prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, premiered in 2025 and has been renewed for a second season
After eight seasons chronicling one of TV's most epic, time-traveling love stories, Outlanderis coming to an end — at least for now.
The Starz drama, based on Diana Gabaldon's novel series of the same name, first premiered in 2014, following a WWII combat nurse who accidentally time-travels to 18th-century Scotland and falls in love with a Highland warrior.
Though Gabaldon has yet to finish the 10th book in her series, the network confirmed in 2023 that season 8 would conclude the TV adaptation of Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser's (Sam Heughan) story. However, executive producer Maril Davis was careful not to close the door entirely.
"I would like to finish out Diana's books," she told Radio Times in March 2026. "We don't have book 10 out yet so I mean, there's an opportunity to come back, depends on how we leave this season 8.”
So, why is Outlander ending? Here's everything to know about the drama's conclusion and what it means for the franchise's future.

According to the series' stars, the decision to end Outlander with season 8 came down to the story reaching a natural stopping point, while ensuring the beloved drama had enough time for a proper farewell.
In a joint March 2026 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Balfe said discussions about ending the series began during season 7, the final season she and Heughan were contracted for at the time.
“We were more than halfway through season 7 before anyone came to talk to us,” Balfe said, explaining that she and Heughan felt the series needed another installment to properly wrap up Claire and Jamie's story.
Heughan added that “a lot of thought” went into the decision. While the pair were ready for new creative chapters after more than a decade on the show, they also wanted the ending to feel satisfying for longtime fans.

Balfe and Heughan weren't the only Outlander cast members ready to bid adieu to the long-running drama.
Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna, told Extra TV in February 2026 that they "already said goodbye" to the series after wrapping filming nearly two years earlier.
"This is hashing up some old wounds," the actress joked about doing press for the season 8 premiere. "But it's lovely that the fans are finally getting to share the show with us ... We're just excited to see everyone's reaction and now we can say goodbye all together."
Will there be an Outlander spinoff?

Yes, a spinoff prequel series following the love stories of Claire and Jamie's parents premiered on Starz in August 2025.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood was renewed for a second season, which is set to release in the fall of 2026, per Deadline.
Though Balfe and Heughan have not reprised their roles for the spinoff series, they're both open to reprising their characters in the future.
"I think we always say, never say never," Balfe told PEOPLE in March 2026. "If there was a great script and it gave these characters a good reason to revisit them."
